Is parquet flooring making a comeback? There’s much more to hardwood floors than just the regular way of laying planks. Your wide plank floor can incorporate different designs and patterns to suit your taste. Parquet flooring has recently been making a comeback in some areas, so it might be something to consider if you want to do something different with your wide plank floors.
What is parquet flooring?
Parquet flooring consists of geometric patterns rather than laying the planks in a straight manner. According to Wikipedia, “Large diagonal squares known as parquet de Versailles were introduced in 1684 as parquet de menuiserie (“woodwork parquet”) to replace the marble flooring that required constant washing, which tended to rot the joists beneath the floors.”

Three types of parquet floors
Herringbone – This is the most popular parquetry pattern. The herringbone pattern is composed of rectangular pieces of flooring of equal size, arranged in a zig-zag pattern. The planks are staggered slightly so that the end of one plank meets the size of another. This design is becoming increasingly popular recently, so it’s something you might want to consider this option if you’re in the market for new floors.
Chevron – this pattern is essentially an inverted ‘V’. Chevron floors are another classic hardwood floor pattern that are seeing a bit of a comeback. Although herringbone and chevron are similar patterns, they are not the same.
Monticello parquet is another pattern consisting of tiled wood. This design more common with narrower/strip flooring rather than wide planks, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that it can’t be done with wider planks.
There are also different geometric patterns like those created by our students at City Floor Supply’s last Lagler/Loba installation class. A capable contractor can create something akin to art from hardwood flooring.
