We recently had a project where our 12″ wide white oak engineered floors were installed in a beautiful beach house on the Jersey Shore. The homeowners wanted a rustic yet light colored, neutral floor to go with the rest of the decor of the home, and we were able to make that happen for them with the right combination of products.
A neutral look
The floor was coated with Bona Craft Oil 2K, which is a European oil finish system. European oil finishes are great because they allow you to create a natural, matte look in the floor.
The homeowners were going for a neutral style, with a very flat, matte look, which we helped them achieve with this combination of products. Using the European oil system, there was no sheen or gloss to distract from the natural character of the floors. This type of flooring and finish is perfect for those seeking a rustic look in their home and their flooring.
Added stability at the beach
We chose an engineered product for this project because this is highly recommended for floors wider than 5”…due to their susceptibility to fluctuations in temperature and humidity in the environment. The beach environment adds extra fluctuations in temperature and humidity, making it extra essential to take preventative measures against cupping, gapping, and other issues that can arise when hardwood floors absorb or lose too much moisture in response to such fluctuations.
These floors were even installed upstairs in the home. It’s amazing to have that kind of stability in flooring at the beach to the point where it’s not going to cup or crown, and it’s made possible by the fact that the flooring is engineered rather than solid wood.
Amazing versatility
Bona Craft Oil 2K lends more versatility than other finishes because you can coat over it with a urethane product, which is what we did with this project to create additional durability in the floors, since the homeowners have pets and host a lot of guests at their beach house.
Bona Craft Oil 2K is one of the only systems in a European oil style that can be coated with another finish on top. It is also good as a standalone system.
Bona Craft Oil 2K offers eight colors which are mixable to create a completely custom look. This is why we usually gravitate towards this system with our wide plank flooring projects.
