About Flame Birch Flooring
Flame Birch floors, also known as Curly Birch floors, are so named because of their unique, wavy graining pattern. This flooring is particularly rare due to the fact that birch trees which produce this distinct graining pattern are relatively difficult to find. When birch lumber is graded, the majority of the red heartwood and the yellow sapwood are separated. The sapwood is referred to as Yellow Birch and the heartwood as Red Birch, while the wood which contains this unique wavy graining pattern is treated almost as if it is a separate species altogether––this is called Flame Birch. Flame Birch flooring has a light, muted yellowish color. The select grade applied to these floors mean that this flooring does not have knots or defects. This species is not particularly sensitive to sunlight and as such will not darken considerably over time. With a Janka hardness rating similar to that of white oak, this species will withstand a moderate amount of foot traffic and its relatively high level of dimensional stability means that this floor will hold up to moderate seasonal changes in relative humidity.
