There is so much conflicting information on the internet about wide plank floors that sometimes it’s hard to figure out what’s true and what’s not. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get at Wide Plank Floor Supply. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, feel free to call us at (877) 697-5265 or email info@wideplankfloorsupply.com to speak with a wide plank flooring expert.
How much does it cost to install a wide plank floor?
It depends on several factors, but you can expect to pay anywhere between $5 and $10 per square foot for labor. This doesn’t include the cost of materials, which can range anywhere from $10 to $20 per square foot for the flooring itself depending on the options you select. These are simply averages and the amount may fluctuate based on your location, the quality and width of your flooring, and any treatments that are applied to the floor before installation.
We can help you find a local, competent contractor through City Floor Supply’s Find a Contractor service.
What’s the difference between an engineered and solid wide plank floor?
An engineered floor is typically made up of several layers of plywood underneath a thin, 1 to 4 mm wear layer of solid wood on top. Much more stable than a solid wide plank floor, especially when it comes to wider planks, since wood planks get less stable as they increase in width.
A solid wide plank floor is just that––a solid piece of wood made into planks, no plywood layers underneath. These are less dimensionally stable than engineered wide plank floors and tend to fluctuate more readily in response to environmental changes.
We highly recommend choosing engineered floors when working wide planks because this will provide more stability than a solid wood floor.
How do I care for my wide plank floor?
Use wood-friendly cleaning products only, such as Bona Squeaky Clean, ideally with a microfiber mop. Beware of generic cleaning products because certain ingredients can actually eat away at your floor’s finish.
How do I see what floors you have in stock?
We don’t keep stock of our wide plank floors because they are completely custom made and milled to order. This allows you to choose exactly which species you want, how wide you want your flooring to be and whether you want random width planks or the same width throughout, and which treatments to apply to your flooring. The end result is a much higher quality floor than those you can buy at a typical big box store.
The best way to get a sense for which flooring you want is to come visit our showroom in King of Prussia, PA.
