At Wide Plank Floor Supply, we’re always inspired by the ways our products come to life in unique homes—and this latest project is no exception. Tucked just off the inlet in a serene Mid-Atlantic setting, this custom residence masterfully blends natural materials, regional craftsmanship, and wide plank red oak flooring to create an environment that feels both luxurious and grounded.
The homeowners, along with their design and build team—including flooring contractor Chris King of Atlantic Flooring, architect Murray Arnott Design, builder D.F. Poley, and log construction experts Nicola LogWorks—set out to design a home that celebrates its coastal surroundings. From the abundant natural light to the warm Douglas fir and western red cedar structural elements, every detail speaks to the harmony between architecture and nature. But it’s the floor that truly anchors the space.
A Floor That Reflects the Landscape

Expertly installed by Chris King of Atlantic Flooring and his team, this Allegheny Mountain live sawn wide plank red oak floor features 6” and 8” live-sawn engineered boards sourced from the mountains of Pennsylvania. Finished natural and sanded on site, the floor boasts a raw, matte sheen that highlights the natural red oak patina—rich, warm, and full of character.
Live-sawn flooring is a unique cut that captures the full cross-section of the log. The result is a blend of grain patterns—rift and quartered on the edges, plainsawn cathedral grain in the center—combined with striking features like knots, branch inclusions, and mineral streaks. Rather than hiding these characteristics, this project leans into them, creating a visual texture that mirrors the rugged beauty of the surrounding shoreline.
As Joe Glavin from Wide Plank Floor Supply explains in the video walkthrough above, “This is a very unique floor for that particular cut. You’re going to get larger knot inclusions, and some detail on the outside that’s straight grain. The combination is what makes it so compelling.”
Why Engineered and Live-Sawn Floors?

Choosing engineered wood was a strategic decision—one that balances beauty with performance. Given the home’s location near the water and potential humidity fluctuations, engineered planks provide superior dimensional stability. The wider 6” and 8” planks are less prone to movement, making them ideal for a slightly suspended floor structure or one with radiant heat.
Live-sawn boards, particularly in red oak, offer another layer of distinction. While white oak is often the go-to for those seeking dramatic flecking, this project proves that red oak, when cut and finished with intention, can be just as striking. The natural matte finish allows the wood to breathe visually, enhancing its organic, almost raw quality. It’s a look that feels elevated yet relaxed, perfectly suited to modern rustic design.
A Collaborative Vision

What makes this project truly remarkable is the collaboration behind it. Each trade brought a high level of craftsmanship and intentionality. From the design vision of Murray Arnott to the precision construction by D.F. Poley, and the heritage techniques of Nicola LogWorks, every detail was executed with care. Chris King’s expert floor installation tied it all together, showcasing not just skill but an eye for aesthetic balance.
As homeowners and designers increasingly seek authenticity and natural beauty in their materials, this project stands as a shining example of what’s possible with quality wide plank flooring. It’s not just about surface appeal—it’s about telling a story through materials that last a lifetime.
Whether you’re building a coastal retreat, renovating a rustic-chic escape, or simply exploring flooring options that offer warmth, durability, and timeless style, this red oak live-sawn floor is an inspiring model.
