6″ and 8″ Red Oak Live Sawn Installation on a Mid-Atlantic Inlet

Set just off an inlet in the Mid-Atlantic, this custom coastal home features a stunning installation of 6” and 8” wide live-sawn engineered red oak flooring, expertly installed by Chris King of Atlantic Flooring. The site-sanded, bevel-free planks were finished with a natural matte sheen that brings out the warm red patina of Pennsylvania-grown red oak, blending beautifully with the home’s architectural elements, including Douglas fir and western red cedar beams.

Live-sawn flooring, known for its distinctive grain mix and natural inclusions, was chosen to reflect the organic textures of the surrounding shoreline. With visible knots, mineral streaks, and a combination of cathedral and rift grain patterns, the floor adds character and warmth while maintaining a refined, seamless appearance. The choice to finish the floor naturally allows the red oak’s inherent beauty to take center stage.

Engineered construction ensured the floor’s dimensional stability, making it well-suited for a slightly suspended subfloor and potential environmental changes in this waterfront setting. The use of wide planks enhances the open-concept layout, creating visual continuity from room to room and drawing the eye outward to the stunning natural views.
